The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game where players place bets to try and win money. There are different forms of poker and each has its own rules. The main goal is to get the highest hand and win the pot.

The first player to act is called the ante, and can raise or fold before the cards are dealt out. The ante can be $1 or more, depending on the game.

Once the ante has been placed, the dealer will deal two cards to each player. Each player can then place an ante to see their cards and bet accordingly.

After betting, the players can discard up to three cards and take new ones from the deck. The dealer will then shuffle the discards and put them in a stack at the bottom of the draw pile.

Next, a player can bet in a clockwise fashion. Once all players have placed bets, the flop will be dealt and the betting round will begin again.

The player with the best 5-card hand wins the round, and all of the chips in the pot. If there are a tie, all of the remaining players share the pot.
