Poker is a card game in which players bet based on the cards they hold. The winner of the pot is the player with the best hand.<\/p>\n
The rules of poker differ between games, but the basic strategy is to minimize your losses and maximize your winnings. Betting is a key component of the game and can be manipulated to your advantage, but it requires skill and knowledge to do so.<\/p>\n
Before the cards are dealt, each player is required to put a contribution into the pot, called an ante or blind bet (sometimes both). The dealer shuffles the deck, and the player on the left of the big blind, who is the first active player, acts first by folding, calling the ante, or raising; if no one raises the blind, the small blind or the player to his right may call or raise.<\/p>\n
After the initial deal, each player has an opportunity to place bets in what are called betting intervals. Each interval ends when the betting totals are equalized.<\/p>\n
A betting round is usually accompanied by a showdown, when all remaining players display their hands face up on the table. The highest hand wins the pot, although ties are broken by the rank of the next card in each hands.<\/p>\n
Depending on the variant of poker being played, a player may draw additional cards to build their hand or replace the cards already in their hand with cards from the community deck. The resulting hand is known as a “hand” or a “pair”.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
