Many people have no idea how Poker came about. There are many versions of the game, and all have some sort of common element: chance. While the word poker may have come from an apocryphal French game, the most common form is probably the game poque, from which we get the English word. The game eventually evolved into German pochen and, later, into a more modern form called primero. French settlers brought the game to North America and it spread from there.<\/p>\n
The rules of poker vary slightly by casino, but the basic principles are the same. Players place ante and blind bets before being dealt cards. They also get two “hole” cards, or “community” cards, and must raise or check to stay in the game. As each player makes a bet, the dealer deals two cards from the deck and “burns” one card. Once the community cards have been dealt face-up, the dealer discards the last three cards.<\/p>\n
The game of Poker is played with four or five-card cards, and has many variations. In the original game, 20 cards were used, but many variations have been introduced since. Some games have more than one deck, and others have shorter packs. Regardless of the type of deck, all games involve at least one round of betting. The winner of the hand is determined by the next card, and the pot is split.
