Poker is a game of strategy, chance and risk in which players place chips into a pot for the opportunity to win more. It has a wide variety of variations, from Hold’Em to Stud to Draw to Badugi, but the rules usually stay the same. The game is played by a number of people around a table and can be very fast-paced.<\/p>\n
Each player puts an initial amount into the pot, called a bet. This amount is often a small percentage of the total amount in the pot. The player to his left must either “call” this bet by placing in the pot an amount at least equal to that of the previous player, or he can “raise” this amount by adding more money into the pot. A player may also choose to fold his hand, thereby dropping out of the current betting.<\/p>\n
The object of a poker hand is to win the pot, which consists of all the bets made during a deal. This can be done by having the highest ranked hand of cards or by continuing to bet that one’s hand is the best until all other players drop out of the hand.<\/p>\n
When playing poker, be sure to read the other players’ body language and facial expressions to determine their betting patterns. Conservative players tend to fold early in a hand, while aggressive players will often bet high early on in a hand.
